Read the article "Why do People Bully?" After you read about each type of motivation, use the comment feature to add your ideas or ask a question. When you have finished, go back to your Cornell Notes and take notes on your findings. On your notes, write down the percentage of each cause that you think motivates the bullies at Ringgold. socratic seminar Preparation
- First, review your notes and annotations in Please Stop Laughing at Me.
- Next, take a look over the questions I have prepared. Consult the page numbers to refresh your memory and think about how you might answer them. Write down your thoughts ahead of time. Print the questions with your answers and bring it to class with you. DO NOT wait until the day of the seminar to start answering questions.
- Write a few of your own thoughts, ideas, or questions. Or, just highlight some of your summer reading work so that you remember to refer to it.
- Write down a few ideas about how the book and the study we have done so far can help you answer our big question: How do our perceptions of reality impact our moral, legal and human responsibilities and influence our actions?
- Finally, familiarize yourself with our Socratic Seminar Rules of Engagement. This page include the rules, the evaluation rubric, and the self- and peer-evaluations you will be completing in class.
***If you are absent for a scheduled seminar, you will need to write out answers for that day's questions and turn them in when you return to school. Your grade will be based off of your answers. This is YOUR responsibility!

Essay Assignment |
Consider our "Big Question" for Module 1:
How do our perceptions of reality impact our moral, legal and human responsibilities and influence our actions? Think about the various perspectives of reality we examined in our study of bullying as well as the perspectives you read about in Please Stop Laughing at Me. Write a short essay about how perception influences our responsibilities and actions. Refer specifically to examples from the novel and our work in class in your answer. |
